The Firm by John Grisham

After reading the ‘The Runaway Jury’ and ‘The Partner’ a few months back, I have always wanted to read ‘The Firm’. I read many amazing critics about the movie in which Tom Cruise starred in. But, I refused to watch the movie. Not until I read the book first. I always believe that the book is always better (: and, yes! I have to say, this novel…is amazing.
John Grisham, what an amazing author. The books that he writes are usually Law related which is a plus point for me as I love reading/watching law related stories. I have always wanted to be a lawyer. (One of the many childhood dreams which I had)
So yes, back to the novel. It is really amazing. I was already bought over right from the very start. I found it very difficult to put the book down. At the end of each chapter, John Grisham amazingly releases vital evidence and adds a new twist to the story. This makes the novel even more thrilling and exciting to read.
Synopsis: At the top of his class at Harvard Law, he had his choice of the best in America. He made a deadly mistake. When Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage and hired him a decorator. Mitch McDeere should have remembered what his brother Ray — doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail — already knew. You never get nothing for nothing. Now the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch’s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice — if he wants to live.
This novel shows me how money and fortune can blind everyone, even the smartest and brainiest one. Despite how smart or witty you are, money and fortune will always bring out the greed in you. It will bring out the jealousy and the need to want more and more. & to satisfy that greed, people may do things they would lead them to situations they least expect themselves to land up in. People would even kill to get what they want. That’s the freaky part. That’s how humans like you and me are. John Grisham reiterates this point beautifully in this novel.
As a reader of this novel, I could totally relate and share the tension, confusion and frustration that Mitch (the main character of this novel) felt during the various periods of his career. The climax of the whole novel is when both the FBI and the firm leaders start chasing and hunting him down. Mitch does not only have to protect himself but he also has to protect both his brother and wife from his enemies.
This is definitely a reader! I would rate it a 4/5 for this book! (: Now, it’s time for me to see if Tom Cruise did justice to this amazing novel!
